About This Architecture
Enterprise file share migration from on-premises NetApp to SharePoint Online spans two distinct architectural states. During migration enablement, a Windows Server 2022 worker VM in an isolated Azure subnet runs ShareGate and PowerShell to copy data from NetApp SMB shares to SharePoint Online while users maintain access to on-premises storage via ExpressRoute. Identity synchronization bridges Active Directory and Entra ID during parallel coexistence. The future state eliminates all migration infrastructure—worker VM, migration subnet, and temporary tooling—leaving users with direct cloud access to SharePoint Online as the primary document store and Entra ID as the single identity source. This two-state comparison helps migration architects plan resource allocation, timeline dependencies, and decommissioning milestones for large-scale Azure file migrations.
